DICE & K9/MOBBSTARR : THA' JOURNEY (V3 Records)

~edit under construction.sorry for the inconvenience~
With hip-hop on a roll worldwide, it only seemed a matter of time before the Philippines had a sort of hip-hop reinvention. However, nobody at the time thought that it would come from Cebu courtesy of Dice & K9, but from one of the established hip-hop institutions in the capital.
While Cebuano rock acts continue to surge in popularity, Dice & K9/Mobbstarr (now in a period of transition between the old name and the collective Mobbstarr as K9 has now departed the group) is still the only hip-hop act from Cebu recognized nationwide. However, due to the intense popularity of their breakthrough hit single Itsumo from the album Mobbstarr, they're now part of the Filipino hip-hop elite, joining the ranks of Francis Magalona and Gloc-9 amongst others. However, this hasn't erased the idea from critic's minds that the group is merely a flash in the pan. After all, there have been many artists locally and worldwide, who have proved to be one-hit wonders.
On the Cebuano trio's latest album Tha' Journey, Dice, Hi-C and Trapp aim to dispell these fears once and for all by offering haters and critics a 67-minute album of 16 songs, with the intention of leaving these people gaping in amazement.
The album certainly starts off strongly, what with the lyrical gymnastics of Mike Swift and SVC on Neva Letting Go and the crunktastic first single 6 In Da Mornin', which is nothing like what Dice, Hi-C and Trapp have ever done before. While 6 In Da Mornin' doesn't have the same catchy chorus as Itsumo, the sheer energy provided by Dice's beats carries the whole song through to the end in the same way that Lil' Jon's random yet rebellious chants do on his best songs. It also helps that the song is one of Dice's best productions and most definitely his hardest hitting song, what with it's dirty and industrial groove that is reminiscent of The Prodigy.
However, things start to go downhill soon after this, apart from It's You, which is saved by K9's trademark synth-heavy and piano-laden beats and Hi-C's seductive crooning . Apart from that song, the album's downward trend continues until it reaches the trough that is Watchin' Me and DJ MOD's Borderline (which is a dull and unimaginative remake of Madonna's song of the same title). While these songs get rather tiring and just make you want to gnash your teeth in frustration, K9 appears once again like a knight of shining armour, saving the day with the Gloc-9 collaboration Can U Feel Me?. Like 6 In Da Mornin', it is one of the album's highlights, although the rather basic lyrics somewhat dim the song's propulsive beat, which has a hypnotic effect on your hips. While it can be ridiculed for its lyrics, Can U Feel Me?'s verses actually gel quite well with the song's heavy synths and Timbaland-esque stuttering percussion to create the sort of infectious club track that you'd expect from the likes of Scott Storch or The Neptunes.
Even if Can U Feel Me? is K9's strongest track beat-wise, he still has a trick up his sleeve in the album ender Tha' Beat featuring 6000 Goonz, which continues the futurisque stylings of songs like Come On and Stop. Look. Listen, though this time with sparse and mechanical beats influenced by the Neptunes and their minimalist approach on Snoop Dogg's Drop It Like It's Hot. Like Can U Feel Me?, it's a potential single, but with a stronger foundation in the lyrical department, even if Dice attempts to wreck the whole song by recycling his verses from previous songs on the album.
It's not only the the K9 produced songs at the tail end of the album, which make you once again enjoy the sonic brew that Tha' Journey is, as the closing tracks by Slick n' Sly Kane (Gangsta Flick) and Squid 9 (Shootin' Star) are also slick productions with strong and fiery contributions, especially from the gifted Mista Blaze, as well as from Slick n' Sly Kane and Menace on Gangsta Flick, and Syke, Loonie and Squid-9, who contributes a soulful chorus on Shootin' Star. These songs almost give you the feeling that Tha' Journey isn't over yet and is just only beginning for Dice & K9/Mobbstarr. This sentiment is emphasized in Dice's cover of Tracy Chapman's Fast Cars on Fast Life, which has the chorus wherein he sings that they don't know where they are going, but that it is time for the group and it's frontman's 6000 Goonz turn to shine.
Asking where one is going is a common question that everyone asks themselves, but like everyone else, we and Dice & K9/Mobbstarr don't know where they are heading. This might explain why there is a slightly confusing message being sent out by the album, because on one hand it has a has a host of futuristic productions which don't really work most of the time, and on the other hand, we have the group still dwelling on past themes and the stereotypical gangster posturing.
It might not be consistent throughout the course of 16 tracks and have too much filler, but Dice & K9/Mobbstarr's Tha Journey should be applauded for trying to be inventive in a genre which doesn't favour much in the way of change. Admittedly, Tha' Journey's themes don't stray far from the hip-hop stereotype, but at least you can hand it to Dice, his guest producers and emcees for trying to push the Filipino hip-hop envelope that little bit further towards a unique style that is capable of matching the best from around the world. And with that said, count me in as a passenger on the Cebuano group's journey to greatness that started way back in the Anthill Mobb 10 years ago.
+++
The Lolly Rating: 2.75/5
Verdict: Not as tight as Mobbstarr or it's indie predecessor Mobbmusic; perhaps due to number of guest producers and emcees on the record, which confuses the group as to what and who they want to be. However, it has a number of strong moments and in general, it is a hip-hop album that tries to showcase the skills and talents of the group, but also one that wants to be innovative and a watershed for other hip-hop albums to come.

cool blog parekoy. i also read ian's & dodobird's blogs too. good review on dice & k9. thats how i felt about the album too. one song they sound like the roots, then they sound like the neptunes, then they do a p. diddy, with all the samplings and shiet. basta masyadong madaming styles na hindi masyadong nag-mesh. mas consistent yun mobbstar album nila. tsaka mas trip ko talaga duets nila dice tsaka ni k9. si trapp ok sya pero masyadong ma-ala snoop dogg yun style nya. somtimes it works w/ dice' beats and sumtimes it doesnt.
and what is up wid "Once Upon A Rhyme"??? susginoo.

but maybe i just set my expectations too high. tolerable parin naman yun album eh. lalo na yun mga songs na may rap parts na iba yun dialect. is that visayan? refreshing lang sa pandinig. bakit nga ba umalis si k9????

strange, but i think i also perhaps had too high expectations for tha journey. however, it's unavoidable, coz the group's previous albums were quite good (at least sonically. i think that the somewhat confused message the group is sending out is due to k9's departure from the group, though the album is also a sign that the group want to experiment more. but it's strange that kahit wala si k9 sa eksena, his tracks are all much better than dice's (apart from 6 in tha' mornin') are amongst the best on the album. siguro part din ng problema is that the album has too many guests (vocalists and producers) compared to their mobbstarr album, which had less guests on it, making it flow better from one track to the next.
like you, i also miss the interchanging vocals of k9, kasi kahit na trapp can rap better than dice, he can be a bit tiring. and yes, he is a bit too like snoop and once upon a rhyme has got to be one of the worst songs on the album. it's nonsensical, pero ganun din yung to da beat yo' (from mobbstarr)

i think you mean tha' beat and shooting star, with cebuano and ilonggo vocals respectively from 6000 goonz and syke.

apparently, k9 left to pursue solo music in cebu and ayaw daw niya sa manila. but i'm not that 100% sure on that. kasi i for myself am not too sure. but sayang noh na umalis siya?

tama ka na mas magaling mag-rap si trapp kesa kay dice. kasi dun sa kantang 'Slowly' ata, basta track 3, lumabas yun pinoy accent ni dice. nasabi nya "t00k op er klots". i think he was trying to say "took off her clothes". hhahhaha. wala nakakatawa lang. hindi man sila kumuha ng re-take.

about 6000 goonz and syke. do you know if they have an album out?? astig lang makarinig nang pinoy rap na iba dialect.

i'm not sure, kasi i'm not that knowledgeable about the cebuano hip-hop scene. but here's what i know.

there is konigs (a cebuano trio and 6000 goonz affiliate). they have an album out entitled nganong ni enter with guest vocals by the mobbstarrs.

there's also untouchables and dogg fellaz and anthill mobb, all of which are 6000 goonz affiliates.

another cebu hip-hop act is alkaline ,a sort of rnb/rap group with a sick song called taking over the floor .

there used to be ill pride (with mista blaze, but i think it fizzled out when mista blaze went solo). apart from that, i don't really know about other visayan acts, though syke was on the rekognize album. jsut check hsi myspace and multiply pages at: http://www.myspace.com/syke66 and http://dolero.multiply.com/

videos:
konigs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H0JMo-pNeA

dogg fellaz:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZUUfz_t3jc

untouchables: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8b5mB4OakM

anthill mobb:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvtYVzSnb-o

i can't find any videos for alkaline, but here is their myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/alkaline

last but not least, there's the dancehall act CoolieDread and The Microphone Commanders at: http://www.myspace.com/cdmc or http://cooliedreadproductions.com/

the 6000 goonz have a website at http://www.6000goonz.com/, though there is no content yet. same goes with coolie dreadproductions.com
hopefully though there will be content on the two websites soon.

apart from the acts i mentioned there might be a couple others as well.

no problem.
that's where i actually heard of konigs. hope you like the album, even though i have no idea what it's like. maybe you can even write an album review on it, coz i haven't seen any yet.

not particular to local hiphop. Sun Valley crew, 7 shots, artstrong and some cross-over acts napakinggan ko na ung album. any recommendations?

tol, how about chillitees? it's a great r&b album. you got your wurlitzer, your flute and that sensuous vibe. sarap nun.

isa pang inaabangan ko eh yung Sino Sikat?!! there's something with this r&b/neosoul acts playing on major rock/indie events. even updharmadown sounds like some neosoul-fusion hybrid. pinatungan lang ng guitar textures. hehe! pero i like the band kaya lang mejo masyadong pretentious at mahangin.

eist sino yung hiphop guy na may collaboration with karl roy (kapatid/POT)

out na ba ung album nun? hehe..

7 shots are ok...

not that fond of artstrong or SVC, but then everybody's tastes are different.

chilitees?..haven't got it, though quite a number of people like them.

the problem with hip-hop live..is that it's not that great as listening to on your ipod/mp3 player or stereo...but then again, parang medyo kulang yung attention na binibigay sa ating hip-hop scene, compared sa rock scene

and for that guy who's got a collabo with karl roy...i'll have to checkup on that...kulang na yung knowledge ko since umalis ko sa pinas...hehe

sure dodobird can help..=)

parang di ko din kilala yung guy na yun ah... hmmm...

Chillitees is cool - in more ways than one ;) Not a fan of Artstrong either. Hehe.

Ei Jagoo, linked you up already dude.

ei you mentioned na umalis ka na nang pinas? so saan ka na ngayon located. weird kasi kung kailan ako umalis ng pinas eh dun ako nagkaroon ng hilig mag kolekta ng mga opm rock artists. nasa california ako ngayon. meron rin ditong mga pinoy cd store so kahit papaano updated parin ako sa music sa pinas. pero usually sa kabayancentral.com ako umo-order. o kaya kung may umuwi ng pinas eh nagpapabili na lang ako. pero yah, im in the states pero i dont even listen to their radio stations here, or yun mga foreign bands. hahahha cguro pag nakatapat mo tsikot ko sa stoplight eh maririnig mo either wolfgang or kapatid! or SATI or even urbandub! hahhahahaa ok cige! nice blog!

thanks

i'm in the UK at the moment but haven't got round to ordering opm cds off the internet yet.

good for you that there is a cd store/s in the states dedicated to selling opm. kudos to that/those store/s!

mind you, there must be a similarly dedicated shop in London considering the vast numbers of pinoys in the UK.

btw, you can listen to nu107 on the internet or i think you still can. or youtube and myspace are both good places to know more about pinoy artists

K9 has a baby girl now & thats the main reason why he left aside from those he cant cope up with the pressure here in Manila. He's a laid Back type of person. He prefers to stay in Cebu.

Re: "t00k op er klots" you say, sinadya po yun... dice engineered, mixed & mastered the whole album & its impossible na nagkamali lang sya nun, knowing dice... sobrang critic sya, perfectionist din po yun. Besides there's RIGHT THURR right?

Re: the album Tha Journey, its their journey, they said those in that album are those people , producers, lyricists , artists & friends that they met in their Journey. & they intentionaly had it that way. To show that they can do any beat & can work with any producers alive, so syempre iba ibang producers yan, thats why iba ibang sound, if you et what I mean.

Re: 6000 Goonz, DiCE starte it way way back to primarily held cebu rap artists... thts why "6000" (that's cebus zip code) now, roster includes The Anthill Mobb, Mobbstarr, Königs, Untouchables, Stick Figgas, Hi-C, Mac Bully, Loonie & even Pointblank (k9's Band)

Re: Once Upon a Rhyme, that song was 1st recorded 2002 & rerecorded it last year, some may not like it but more will. Ive heard that what Viva wants to release next.

Re: Fastlife, that was recorded before itsumo, so mga early 2002, yan yung song na pinalitan nila with ITSUMO coz their afraid na habulin sila ng publishing.According to Dice, gusto na nyang magretire, he's been doin this since 1993 & wanted to stay behind the scene thats why maybe he did not put too much effort in his lyrics now, unlike the Anthillmobb days & past dice & k9 albums they had.

Re: production, I admit that the tandem between Dice & k9 was great, Dice being hardcore & dark + k9's sweet touch with his bells & stuff. There is only 1 producer in MOBBSTARR now & thats dice... Two heads is always better than 1 right.
k9 said he's comin' back, & he's bringing his family here. abangan natin.

Mobbstarr is currently doin their 4th album "TIME SPACE RHYTHYM & STARRs" Dice found a new partner Klumcee & they call their production BEATMONX. Expect the unexpectable daw. Their so much in japanese
right now after havin a 1wk tour there. & Soon to be having their Dubai & US tour.

alex: thanks for all that info. it was appreciated.

just wondering..are you close to the group? coz you seem to know k9 pretty well to know about his personal life

don't think it's a good idea to have once a rhyme as a single. any of k9's productions on the album will do, but not that song.

anyway, thanks for those tidbits of info.

sure thing b-roc. love to do so if you'll let me, though i'll need to hear the material first.

however, it will have to be in a month or so, as i've kinda decided on the stuff to put in the first issue of the relaunched carbon fibre lollipop.

however, i was already planning to make the second issue a hip-hop one, as well as expanding it with interviews with filipino hip-hop artists. so mike swift's album and nimbus nine#s mixtape would fit in nicely with that.

thanks for the support and appreciation. by the way, how did you find out about the site? (just curious)

hope to be hearing from you again. if you want to email me, feel free to do so at: gagolian@yahoo.co.uk. just put the subject title as the carbon fibre lollipop so i don't erase it.

cheers

@alex - i think "t00k op er klots" wasnt intentional. he either missed it or couldnt say it and talagang lumabas yun pinoy accent nya. and comparing it to how people talk in the southern part of the US is ridiculous. 'right thurr', 'skurred', 'hurr' as in hair ie. imma get mah hurr did (im going to get my hair done) are all southern slang, meaning thats how they talked. nelly and chingy just popularized it to the point where white chicks from the suburbs in cali are talking like that. i doubt people in manila are gna start saying "t00k op er klots" like its a new slang. and if he is trying to start something 'new' i shouldve heard more of that new 'slang' in the album.

Hi =)
I didnt say that "t00k op er klots" was intentional coz according to him, thats not what he said BUT thats what you've heard well.... he's the one who did the recording right ? =)

Re: Turbulence:
DiCE did a track for Nimbus 9 & i believe that'll be his first single.
